The definition of largest cities vary from country to country and sometimes with in a country. This is because of the change in administrative area and the actual population area. Sometimes, city is defined by its administrative boundaries and it doesn’t matter if there are still population living outside the administrative boundary than they are not counted in the city. However some countries follow a different route and make two or three administrative bodies managing the whole city.

UN released a report recently stating that there are more than 50 thousand cities in the world. Among them only 538 cities have population more than 1 million. Only 35 cities have population more than 10 million and they are called as Mega Cities. The population sometimes doesn’t tell the size of a city because there are many cities that have compact area and huge population. The density of population in such cities is very high.
